Discover the world where Barbie really lives. Says the Florida mayor: "Awesome!"

“Barbie” sets the plastic title character on a mission to move from the once idyllic Barbieland to the “real world” in search of answers to the surprising problems plaguing him.

This is a simplified description of the plot of the film popular culture This summer almost as much Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.

But with a gross of $1 billion to date, you’re probably familiar with the plot of “Barbie” directed by Greta Gerwig.

Barbie, Ken, and Weird Barbie never tells us where Barbieland is, but the famous Harvard-educated astrophysicist with nearly 20 million followers on his Facebook, Thread, and X social media accounts called on the stars and trained him to tell us where he thinks Barbieland is.

We think Jimmy Buffett would agree with Neil deGrasse Tyson’s theory.

Where’s Barbieland?

Tyson writes: “In Barbie, the moon’s orientation places Barbie’s world between 20 and 40 degrees north of Earth’s latitude. Palm trees constrain latitude between 20 and 30 degrees. The sun and moon rise and set over the ocean. So if it’s in the US Barbie World is landing somewhere in the Florida Keys.”

Well, it’s Barbieland, not Barbie World, but close enough.

What does the mayor think?

Key West Mayor Terry Johnston, only the second woman to serve as the southernmost mayor on the map, is delighted with the world’s theory.

“I think that’s cool,” Johnston said, laughing in a phone conversation Friday morning with the Miami Herald. “It’s a great time to have something quirky and positive and you know, so, energetic in the world today.”

Besides, Johnston adds, “Well, we have one of everything else. Why not Barbie?”

Johnston, 72, who was She was elected to her third term In office in 2022, I haven’t seen Barbie yet.

“But I’m going to. Both my daughters have them and I can’t wait to see him,” she said.

So without spoiling it for the few who haven’t seen the movie yet – like Johnston, who may be busy running the island’s community – if Barbie (played by Margot Robbie) fulfills her mission and finds her way back to the Barbilliand of reality. Tyson does not specify. And a “Barbie” sequel is yet to be set. But Johnston enjoys having another (possibly) iconic place on the Keys map to join the other attractions.

“It’s just fun,” Johnston said. “It’s fun. It’s apolitical. It’s just everything we need right now.”
